Fake checks and equipment purchases
A recruiter who sends a check and tells you to buy equipment, send money to a preferred vendor, or return an overpayment may be setting up a fake-check loss. Banks can make funds appear available before a deposited check is finally determined to be fraudulent.
Verify the employer outside the message
Locate the company’s official website independently, check whether the role appears on its careers page, compare recruiter email domains, and contact the company through a verified channel. Do not rely only on links and phone numbers sent by the recruiter.
Compare the offer with a normal hiring process
Look for a verifiable job posting, a recruiter using the employer’s real domain, a reasonable interview process, clear employment terms, and contact information that matches the company’s official site. Be cautious when a supposed employer moves immediately to text-only interviews, asks you to buy equipment with a check they provide, requests banking or identity details before normal onboarding, or sends you packages to re-label and forward. A real company name or copied logo does not prove the recruiter is connected to that company. Independent verification with the employer is the strongest next step.
